School Principal
Tamara Whittington
I am elated to serve as the instructional leader of D.C. Reeves Elementary School. I have been an educator in the Tangipahoa Parish School System for twenty-six years. I taught 8th grade mathematics at Hammond Junior High Magnet School for twenty-two years and served as the Assistant Principal for one year. I also taught 1st grade at Hammond Eastside Elementary. Before coming to D.C. Reeves, I served as an assistant principal at The Martha Vinyard for three years. My philosophy of education is plain and simple. I truly believe that every child has a right to an education regardless of race, creed, religion, sex, or national origin. It is also my belief that each child is a unique individual who needs a protected, compassionate, and motivating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, academically, physically, and socially. As an educator I am committed to every student who enters D.C. Reeves Elementary School. It is my desire to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, conducive to learning, encouraging students to be risk-takers and open-minded, and for students to be able to clearly articulate their ideas. There are three fundamentals that I believe are beneficial to establishing such an atmosphere, the teacher acting as a guiding force in the classroom, encouraging every student to become inquirers to express his/her learning, and promoting admiration for themselves and others.
As an educator it is important that I provide all students an opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one’s life and interests. It is equally important that students are encouraged to become inquirers. Creating a program of study around student interests fosters fundamental enthusiasm and stimulates the zeal to learn. I also believe it is the role of the educator to make students aware of their uniqueness as individuals. In establishing this fact it will enhance the student’s ability to communicate with others and to realize the importance of participating in educational affairs.
It is my hope as an educator to instill a love for learning in the lives of all students. I am convinced that there is an urgency to employ compassionate, dedicated, "Proactive" and unique individuals to transform the lives of our future generation. Every child so rightfully deserves a solid education. As an educator, I will strive daily to see that I am a positive and motivating influence in my students’ lives here at D.C. Reeves Elementary School.
When I am not at D.C. Reeves impacting our youth, I "Sharpen The Saw" by spending quality time with my family and friends as well as giving back to those persons who are less fortunate. I am married to Derek Whittington and we have two beautiful children, Ryan and Jasmine, and our miracle granddaughter, Ryleigh Dion. It is because of them that I "Put FIRST Things First!"
